The introduction of Meta AI in WhatsApp has raised concerns among many users, especially regarding privacy in private and group chats. The Facebook Group’s artificial intelligence, which is behind the blue circle in the app, can theoretically access messages if it is spoken to directly. This is done by typing “@Meta AI,” which transmits the message to the AI. However, all other messages remain end-to-end encrypted.

To increase privacy, WhatsApp has introduced a feature called “Enhanced Chat Privacy”. This feature is disabled by default and must be enabled for each chat individually. Once activated, chat participants will no longer be able to access Meta AI using the @ symbol. This applies to both individual and group chats and offers users more control over their data.

Despite this measure, other ways to share data remain, such as taking screenshots or forwarding messages. Therefore, users should always be careful about what information they share on WhatsApp. The consumer advocates also warn against Meta’s planned use of user data for AI training, which has already led to a warning.

The launch of Meta AI in Europe came after long negotiations with regulators. WhatsApp says personal messages are protected by end-to-end encryption and the AI can only access messages sent directly to it. Nevertheless, skepticism remains high because the data that has once been incorporated into the AI is difficult to retrieve. Additionally, Meta continually collects information such as usernames and IP addresses, which raises additional privacy concerns.
