Later, the president of the Senate, Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, announced the names of the shortlist, headed by Ernestina Godoy, former legal advisor to the Presidency, provisional manager of the FGR office and the favorite; as well as Luz María Zarza and Maribel Bojorges Beltrán.
From the shortlist chosen by President Sheinbaum, the name of the woman who will hold the position of the FGR for a period of nine years will emerge.
When the elected woman, who is expected to be Ernestina Godoy, takes office, Mexico will have a female President, as well as presidents in the Chamber of Deputies – the opposition Kenia López Rabadán – and the Senate – Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez herself. The Ministry of the Interior is also headed by a woman: Rosa Icela Rodríguez.
What’s next in the process?
Now, the Senate will elect one of the three women. A qualified majority vote is needed, that is, at least two-thirds of the plenary session, which Morena and its allies are expected to achieve with their own votes. The vote will be by ballot, that is, in secret, but no difficulties are foreseen.
The candidates who make up the shortlist will appear before the Senate plenary session to present their work project and answer the questions of the senators. This step will be key to defining the profile that the FGR will lead at a time of high expectations regarding its role in the fight against corruption, security and the administration of justice.
The president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) in the Senate, the Morenoist Adán Augusto López Hernández, announced that the process of designating the next head of the FGR could conclude this Wednesday. With this, he pointed out that, if the deadlines were met, the swearing-in of the elected woman would take place today.
According to current regulations, candidates must meet certain requirements: be Mexican by birth, be at least 35 years old, have a professional degree in Law with at least 10 years of experience, enjoy a good reputation and have no convictions for intentional crimes.
