Wheeling, a city with a deep-rooted tradition of recognizing its veterans, recently hosted a significant ceremony. Fourteen residents of Good Shepherd Nursing Home, all of whom served in the United States Armed Forces, were honored with military banners. These banners will be hung throughout the city as part of the City of Wheeling’s Military Banner Program to honor the service and sacrifices of these veterans.

The event was led by Morgan Murphy, administrator of Good Shepherd Nursing Home. She emphasized the importance of giving veterans the respect and recognition they deserve. In her speech, she emphasized that veterans have always put “the country before their own comfort.” These words were well received by those in attendance, including family members and friends of the honored veterans.

Veterans honored included John Anderson, who served on the USS North Carolina during World War II, and John “Jack” Blazier, who was stationed in Korea after the Korean War. Each of the veterans received a replica of their banner, which will be hung around the city. The gesture was described by Wheeling Mayor Denny Magruder as a sign of thanks and recognition for the veterans’ service to their country.

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by John Anderson, a 98-year-old veteran. Anderson expressed his gratitude for the recognition and time dedicated to him and his comrades. The event provided veterans with an opportunity to reminisce and experience the camaraderie that shaped them during their service. This recognition is an important step in ensuring that veterans’ achievements are not forgotten.
