Fuel depots in Russia’s Tambov and Voronezh regions were recently hit by Ukrainian drone strikes, marking a new dimension in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The governor of the Tambov region, Yevgeny Pervyshev, confirmed the impact and fire of a facility, but without giving precise details about the location and extent of the damage. These attacks underscore Ukraine’s increasing ability to conduct long-range drone operations that specifically target Russian military infrastructure.
The Kiev General Staff confirmed the attack on the fuel depot in Dmitrievka, about 50 kilometers northwest of the regional capital Tambov. The images and videos published there show a major fire in the facility that has engulfed several tanks. These objects are used to supply the Russian armed forces, which underlines the strategic importance of the attacks. An oil depot was also hit in the neighboring Voronezh region, with governor Alexander Gusev reporting minor damage.
The Russian Defense Ministry traditionally responded by listing the drones shot down, but without confirming the damage. During the night, 102 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in various regions, including Astrakhan, Belgorod and Voronezh. The Tambov region was not mentioned in the ministry’s tally, raising questions about the transparency and accuracy of reporting.
Since the war began almost four years ago, Russia has regularly bombarded the Ukrainian hinterland with drones, rockets and cruise missiles. Ukraine has now further developed its drone technology to specifically disrupt the fuel supply in the Russian hinterland. However, these attacks do not compare to the destruction caused by Russia in Ukraine. However, the escalation of drone attacks could lead to a further escalation of tensions and pose new challenges for the international community.
