Judging by the news, the answer to the question in title could only be: “No! It’s worse!” Not a day goes by without new cases being reported in health, education, justice and security, while the media (MCS) are involved in a “race to the bottom”, evident in the depressing paraphernalia of details, yet unable to compete with the sordidness of social networks.
This drift can be analyzed from several angles, from the social responsibility of MCS, to possible solutions to the identified problems (admitting that they are well characterized), through comparison with what is happening in other countries. On this last level, a reading of some publications from other countries, from Spain to the USA, passing through most European countries, finds regular references to housing, health and safety. One of these days, for example, the Financial Times dedicated an article to the flight of young people to other countries due to the high cost of housing and few job opportunities. Detail: it was speculated that they were going to the Emirates or the USA; but, the source cited indicated that the priorities were Spain, Ireland and… Portugal! And this one?!
As for solutions, the paradigm is well known: there is a lack of resources. Things, after all, would be fine, if there had been more means. Under the pretext of realism, the impossible is asked. Reform? Proscribed word! The corporate demands are joined by populists and, when we wake up, we find ourselves confronted with a salvific solution, from a more or less benevolent dictator, individual or collective, depending on whether he is on the right or left. And yet, when we see it, our NHS is at the European average, there is a shortage of nurses, but not doctors. And in education, if we have a budget below the OECD average, we spend more per capita. And… In other words, things are not black and white. More sophisticated analyzes are needed, which contrast and combine different views, with an operational concern. Its dissemination, in clear and accessible language, would be a manifestation of the social responsibility of the SOCIAL media… What’s worse, that’s enough!
