This initiative, organized by Michigan Technological University’s Young Americans for Freedom, aims to send care packages containing food, hygiene items and personal messages to soldiers stationed far from home. The campaign has evolved over the past few years and now includes several collection sites in the region, including a location at Walmart in Houghton.
Abigail Leagjeld, a member of Young Americans for Freedom, emphasizes the importance of this action, regardless of political views. She explains that the care packages not only provide material support, but also provide important moral support for the soldiers. Items such as ground coffee and beef jerky are particularly in demand, although the latter cannot contain pork to comply with regulations in certain countries.
The effort is being conducted in collaboration with the Hubbell VFW Post 4624, whose commander, Frank Ozanich, emphasizes the importance of support for Soldiers, especially during the holidays. The packages are expected to reach recipients by Christmas, and organizers hope the campaign will receive even more support this year, as the uncertainties of a possible government shutdown could place additional strain on the soldiers’ situation.
