Castillo remains in preventive detention accused of rebellion, abuse of authority and disturbing public order.
The Peruvian prosecutor’s office has formally requested 34 years in prison for former President Pedro Castillo, who was dismissed and arrested after his attempt to dissolve Congress and carry out a coup d’état on December 7, 2022.
Castillo, whose dismissal sparked months of protests that affected the country’s mining sector, remains in preventive detention accused of “rebellion, abuse of authority and serious disturbance of public tranquility”.
In addition, sentences are requested for several former ministers, including the former prime minister Betssy Chávez and his advisor and predecessor Aníbal Torresfor which 25 and 15 years in prison are requested, respectively, for the crime of rebellion.

Likewise, the Public Ministry has requested 25 years in prison for the former Ministers of Foreign Trade Roberto Sánchez Palomino and of the Interior Willy Huerta Olivas, as well as for the officers of the National Police of Peru (PNP) Manuel Lozada Morales, Jesús Venero Mellado and Eder Infanzón Gómez.
The former president of Peru began the process to dissolve Congress and establish a national emergency government to remain in power, since Parliament had initiated a motion of censure against him that would have removed him from the head of state just 18 months after the beginning of his term.
Because of that decision, He was removed by Congress and subsequently arrested by his own bodyguard.
