The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for certain batches of ByHeart baby formula after they were linked to an outbreak of infant botulism. Since August, 13 children who consumed the affected food have been hospitalized. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far.
The recall affects two batches of the powder with an expiration date of December 1st. The FDA has asked parents and caregivers to review lot numbers 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2 and discard the products immediately. The agency is working with retailers to remove all potentially affected products from shelves.
Infant botulism is a toxin poisoning produced by bacteria that can cause constipation, poor feeding, loss of head control, and difficulty swallowing. In the worst case, paralysis and even death can occur. The FDA advises parents who have recently used ByHeart products to closely monitor their children because symptoms may take weeks to develop.
ByHeart, a company based in New York City, emphasizes that no direct link has been proven between their baby formula and the botulism cases. Nevertheless, the company acted proactively to minimize any risk and ensure the safety of the infants. The FDA and health authorities in several states are currently testing remaining product samples to identify the source of contamination.
ByHeart is known for its organic baby formula, which is made from grass-fed whole milk and is said to be close to the composition of breast milk. Despite the recall, ByHeart accounts for less than 1% of the total baby food market in the United States. Treatment for infant botulism is with BabyBIG, an FDA-approved medication that contains antibodies to fight the neurotoxins.
