In an interview with GQ, Howard explained that although the game is already playable, there are still many steps before the final release. He emphasized that patience is required and fans should be prepared for a longer wait.
Howard, who is leading development on The Elder Scrolls 6, explained that the game is currently the focus of his day-to-day work. A large playtest recently took place in which the team reviewed the current progress and analyzed what further steps are necessary. Howard emphasized that great games aren’t just made, they’re played, and that the screen shows the truth about the state of development.
According to Howard, one reason for the long development time is a necessary creative restart after the success of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. After Skyrim, Bethesda focused on developing Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and most recently Starfield, which was released in 2023. These projects helped the team gain new creative inspiration, which is now being incorporated into the development of The Elder Scrolls 6.
Interestingly, Bethesda has taken a different approach with the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered in 2025. The game was released without prior notice and achieved great success. Howard expressed his desire to release The Elder Scrolls 6 in a similar way, by simply releasing it one day without much notice.
