Donald Trump asked Texas (and later other Republican Party-controlled states) to redraw their congressional districts to ensure the election of more Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections. In California, voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum to redraw congressional districts. The state, whose governor is the Democratic Party’s Gavin Newsom, voted to counter Texas’ Republican-approved map, which would likely result in an increase of three to five Republican seats in Congress. California’s new map would neutralize this initiative by adding the same number of Democratic seats.
The Trump administration and its allies have been making efforts for months to redraw the electoral map in favor of Republicans ahead of next year’s congressional elections. Republicans hold a slim 219-214 majority in the House of Representativeswhich was almost perfectly balanced between 2022 and 2024. The President of the United States of America (USA) has been pressuring Republican-controlled states to reconfigure their constituencies, and Democrats have tried to reverse these efforts.
