The natural disaster caused in the Valencia region, on October 29, 2024, by an isolated high-altitude depression (DANA), a common meteorological phenomenon in Mediterranean areas, remains in the memory of all Spaniards. The 237 deaths that occurred on that fateful day, mainly in the Valencian Community (229), but also in Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia, due to flooding caused by torrential rain, and the enormous material damage caused, are having serious political repercussions.

The president of the Valencian regional government, Carlos Mazón, resigned, overwhelmed by the weight of his responsibilities in managing the disaster and pressured by public outrage. The decision provoked a serious internal crisis in the Popular Party (PP, center-right), in which the resigned military leader, and which has not yet defined a procedure or candidate to succeed him.
