Presidential candidate António José Seguro today considered that the “dynamism of the labor market” was one of the reasons why the Portuguese economy was distinguished by ‘The Economist’ magazine and questioned “what is the need” to change labor legislation.
“This is excellent news for our country, when they recognize the vitality of our economy. But if you notice, one of the foundations of this recognition lies in the dynamism of the labor market that we have in our country, and yet another reason for not understanding the need for the Government to change labor legislation”, he stated.
The candidate supported by the PS visited the “Óbidos Vila Natal” event today. Opponent Luís Marques Mendes was also in this town at the same time, but the two did not cross paths.
One day after the British magazine “The Economist” considered Portugal as the “economy of the year” for 2025 among the 36 richest countries in the world, António José Seguro said he hopes that “everyone, companies, workers, governments, everyone contributes to making the country more competitive, so that there is more wealth, because only then can there be better wages”.
“It’s a victory for the country. In the midst of so much negative news, there is positive news, this is quite stimulating and very positive. And as a candidate for President of the Republic, I am always happy, every time they recognize outside of Portugal, the effort that workers and companies make for us to have an economy that creates more wealth and can also have better salaries”, he defended.
Speaking about the general strike scheduled for next week, Seguro said he understands “the foundations that workers use to demand and defend their rights.”
On the occasion, the candidate for President of the Republic and former secretary general of the PS again did not want to comment on the statements made by the prime minister and leader of the PSD, who on Saturday increased salary targets for the country, now speaking of 1,600 euros minimum wage and 3,000 euros average.
“I already had the opportunity to say yesterday that I do not comment on what the Government’s announcements are. What I am pleased to say, at this moment, is my satisfaction, my joy, that the ‘Economist’ recognizes the dynamism of our economy”, he stated.
António José Seguro visited the historic area of Óbidos today, where he greeted and took photographs with some of the people he met, having heard good luck wishes for the presidential elections on January 18th.
Accompanied by his wife on this return to the village where they got married, there was also the opportunity to drink a cherry in a chocolate cup, with a toast “to the health of Portugal”.
