ABasilica of the Sagrada Familiareached a new historic milestone by becoming the tallest church in the world. The announcement was made this Thursday after a section of one of the building’s towers was lifted and placed in place.
To unfinished work of Antoni Gaudireach now 162.91 meters higha landmark that surpasses the tower of Ulm Cathedralin southern Germany, which measures 161,53 metros.
Despite the published record, the Holy Family has not yet recognized the title, but it is proven that the church measures over 1.38 meters than the church located in Baden-Württemberg.
It is, however, a temporary markas the monument is still under construction, and should reach an even greater height than its current one. The central tower of Jesus Christ, which crowns the basilica, should reach an imposing height 172 metros, as soon as it iscompleted in the coming months.
A first stone of the Holy Family was placed in 1882 and Gaudí never expected to see the work finished in his lifetime. Only one of its towers was completed when the architect passed away.
O pace of work accelerated significantly in recent decades, as the basilica established itself as a one of the main tourist attractions international. People from all over the world flock to the site, fascinated by Gaudí’s unique aesthetic, which fuses Catholic symbolism with organic forms.
The construction is largely financed for ticket revenue entry – last year 4.9 million Visitors paid to access the temple.
Even so, work on the facades and interior decoration of the church will continue for a few more years. Ecclesiastical authorities expect the work to be completely completed within about a decade.
Next year, the centenary of Gaudí’s death will be celebrated with several events to commemorate his legacy.
