The main Portuguese bankers consider Mário Centeno a strong name for vice-presidency of European Central Bank and argue that the Government must support the candidacy.
No “Great Banking Meeting of the Future”in Lisbon, the leaders of BPI, Millennium BCP, CGD and Santander were unanimous in recognizing the weight of the former governor of the Bank of Portugal.
João Pedro Oliveira e Costa (BPI) highlighted the importance of Portugal having representatives in European decision-making positions, stating that the Government must support any Portuguese person with the capacity to occupy relevant positions.
Miguel Maya (BCP) considered Centeno “a good name”although arguing that nationality cannot be the only criterion: first, competence; then, if there is equality, choose Portuguese.
Francisco Cary (CGD) supported the same assessment, highlighting Centeno’s experience and ability, but noting that it is important to compare all candidates.
Pedro Castro e Almeida (Santander) said it makes “complete sense” for Portugal to position itself in this raceassuming that any Portuguese candidate will be competent for the position.
Mario Centeno He was Minister of Finance between 2015 and 2020, presided over the Eurogroup and led the Bank of Portugal between 2020 and 2025.
