Portugal was elected “Europe’s Leading Destination 2025” in the European edition of World Travel Awardswhich took place on Wednesday night, on the Italian island of Sardinia. Considered the “Oscars” of Tourism, the gala for Europe precedes the grand global final of the World Travel Awards, scheduled for December 6th in Bahrain.

In a statement, Turismo de Portugal states that the “Best Destination in Europe 2025” distinction means consolidating the country’s positioning as a “destination of excellence, something that has been reinforced in a sustained manner over the last 10 years”. The award is “the reflection of a strategy focused on the quality, diversity and innovation of the national tourist offer”, adds the note.

“It is with enormous pride that we receive this distinction, which reflects the work, dedication and quality of all the professionals who, on a daily basis, make tourism one of the main pillars of our economy”, declared Pedro Machado, Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services.

Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, highlights that “this award demonstrates Portugal’s great capacity to assert itself as one of the best tourist destinations in Europe. It is the consolidation of a prominent positioning that the country has been building in a sustained manner, and serves as an incentive for us to continue permanently qualifying our destinations and our offer and innovating to ensure that we are in a position to respond to the needs of demand.”

In terms of regional destinations, Madeira (Europe’s Leading Island Destination) and (Europe’s Leading Tourist Board 2025), Lisbon (Europe’s Leading City Break Destination), and Porto (Europe’s Leading City Destination) stood out. Several hotels were also distinguished, as well as TAP and SATA, and several tourist projects, such as Passadiços do Paiva, Dark Star Alqueva and the Aquashow water park. Portugal won more than 20 distinctions.

Created in 1993, the World Travel Awards recognize the work carried out in the area of ​​the tourism industry at a global level, in order to stimulate the competitiveness and quality of Tourism.
