One person was found dead and 25 were injured following a fire that broke out this morning on the eighth floor of a building of nine floors in Mira-Sintrain the municipality of Sintra.

The alert was given at 3:53 am and, according to a source from Greater Lisbon Sub-Regional Commandat 6:30 am the fire was already outbut search operations continued to locate a resident reported missing — later found dead inside the building.

According to the same source, the victims mainly suffered from smoke inhalationincluding two Public Security Police (PSP) agents. Five of the injured had to be transported to hospital for observation and treatment.

The building was completely evacuated due to the intensity of the fire and the spread of smoke throughout the upper floors. To the Authorities are now assessing security conditions structure to determine when residents will be able to return to their homes.

In fighting the flames and in subsequent operations, they were involved 30 operational firefighters from Cacém, Queluz and Algueirão, as well as teams from the National Institute of Medical Emergency and PSP, supported by 13 vehicles.

The fire was confined to the eighth floor, but the spread of smoke made evacuation and relief work difficult in the early hours of the morning.
