The appointment of Sébastien Lecornu, historian Christophe Prochasson told “Nouvel Obs”, means “the end of the monarch president”. The insistence on the same Prime Minister (whose second Government will be regrettably known as Lecornu II, as if anyone deserved it), proves the impotence of Emmanuel Macron, who the French elected twice without liking him either time. “Four Governments in 13 months, a weakened President, a fragmented Assembly”, writes the magazine, is not a “mishap”, but the end of a regime, the Fifth Republic. And in the interview, the historian states that this serious crisis of governability “calls into question the institutional model”, and evokes key moments such as the dissolution of the Popular Front or May 68. “Instability” became not a “cause”, but a “symptom”. A symptom that the French no longer have, or no longer want to have, a dominant President and a solid majority. When Mitterrand confessed “I am the last president of the Republic”, he understood that he was the last president-monarch. And, in fact, since then the presidential status has degraded, between the “hyperactive” and the “normal”, men without “gravitas” or authority. Emmanuel Macron once declared that the French had never “mourned the king”, and perhaps idealized himself as a suffrage king, when he was never more than a talented CEO.
