Microsoft’s investment in Sines, in a partnership with Start Campus (the owner of the data center) and Nscale, will amount to 10 billion euros, revealed Microsoft’s global president, Brad Smith, in an interview with “Jornal de Negócios”. “One of the biggest investments we are making this year in Europe is, in fact, in Portugal”, declared the manager.
The investment aims to serve Microsoft’s artificial intelligence (AI) needs and the first units of those processors should begin arriving in Sines in the first quarter of 2026.
According to Brad Smith, the choice of Sines for this investment “is a reflection of immense work, of the energy policy followed in Portugal, where energy is cheaper and there is a good climate”, and to this is added the broadband connectivity, which makes Portugal “a very important and attractive country in Europe for the construction of this type of data centers”.
Brad Smith is in Portugal this Tuesday to participate in the Web Summit, which he already attended last year, also speaking about AI.
