The Faculty of Law of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa organized the conference “Celebrating Human Rights in Europe”, which marks the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The Convention emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War and introduced “a revolutionary novelty in the protection of fundamental rights in Europe by providing, already in its original version, a mechanism for monitoring the respect, by States Parties, of the rights recognized therein”, describes the General Directorate of Justice Policy. The Charter brought together the rights of European citizens who were dispersed by national laws and international conventions, adding values on which the Union is based. In an interview with Expresso, professors Benedita Menezes Queiroz and Patrícia Fragoso Martins reflect on the current status of these legal instruments.
