Eight districts are today under orange warning due to bad weather in mainland Portugal, indicated the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which predicts a gradual improvement in the weather throughout the day.
The districts of Viseu, Guarda, Santarém, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro and Coimbra are under orange warning due to persistent, sometimes heavy rain, accompanied by wind.
Also due to the rain, the districts of Bragança, Porto, Vila Real, Setúbal and Portalegre are under yellow warning.
The forecasts are for rain, sometimes heavy and persistent, especially in the Central region, gradually decreasing in intensity and frequency from north to south, and wind with greater intensity in the western coastal strip and in the highlands.
In the North region, the sky is expected to be very cloudy, with open areas on the coast from the morning onwards and inland from the afternoon onwards.
IPMA also records a global drop in minimum temperature.
For the Center, very cloudy skies are expected, with open skies from the end of the afternoon and rain, sometimes strong and persistent, gradually decreasing in intensity and frequency from the coast to the interior from the morning onwards.
Weak to moderate winds (up to 30 kilometers per hour) are expected from the western quadrant, sometimes strong (up to 40 km/hour), with gusts of up to 60 km/h, in the coastal strip until early in the morning and in the highlands until mid-afternoon, gradually turning to the north/northwest.
To the south, the forecast is for very cloudy or overcast skies, with open skies in the eastern Algarve and periods of rain, “which can sometimes be heavy”, but, in general, “weak and more likely from the end of the afternoon in the Algarve”, said the IPMA, in a statement.
In Greater Lisbon, the very cloudy sky will give way to clear skies from the end of the afternoon and the rain will decrease in intensity and frequency from the afternoon onwards.
In Greater Porto, the same improvement is expected from this morning onwards.
