At least 24 women they were murdered in Portugal between January and November 15 of this year, 21 of which were victims of fhomicidereveals the Observatory of Murdered Women (OMA) from UMAR. The preliminary report, presented this Tuesday at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto, is based on information released by the media.
Of the 21 fhomicides registered, 16 occurred in intimate relationships e five in a family context. In the remaining three homicides of women, one resulted from a specific argument, another took place in a family environment and the third in another context. The OMA also counts 50 attempted murders: 40 attempted femicides — 38 in intimate relationships and two in a family context — and 10 other attempted murders.
For Cátia Pontedeira, OMA researcher, the numbers show that “feminicides and attempted feminicides continue unabated in Portugal”. At the press conference, he highlighted that, in 2025, “women will still not be safe in any space”, referring to situations that occurred on public roads, workplaces, hospitals and above all in homes shared with attackers.
The researcher reinforces that, this year, all the victims were women and all the offenders were men, without it being possible to draw a single profile: among the victims there are children, young people and older women; Aggressors also vary between young people and adults.
Cátia Pontedeira also criticized the actions of justice, highlighting that there continue to be aggressors “left free with coercive measures that do not involve preventive detention”.
