Andrej Babiš, a self-described “Trumpist”, was called to form a Government by the President of Czechia, Petr Pavel. At the beginning of the month, his party ANO (“Yes”) won the legislative elections on October 3 and 4. The political force obtained 34.5% of the votes, winning 80 parliamentary seats, out of a total of 200. There were doubts about the formation of a majority that could govern and guarantee stability.
Babiš, who was prime minister between 2017 and 2021, started negotiations with the far-right Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD) and the right-wing Motoristas party (Cars-Motorists). The SPD, which is anti-NATO and wants a referendum on Czechia’s exit from the European Union (EU), which Babis categorically rejects, won 15 deputies. THE Motorists (Eurosceptic right), which started as a group with a single cause, to oppose the EU’s plans to phase out combustion engines, won 13 seats.
