Through his X account, the British musician not only showed his support for Sheinbaum Pardo, but also for the former Prime Minister of the former president. Pedro Castillo, Betssy Chávezsince the residence of the Mexican Embassy in Peru granted him asylum, taking into account that the Peruvian prosecutor’s office has requested 25 years in prison against him.
“Long live Claudia. Long live Betssy. Long live Pedro Castillo. Long live Peru. Gringos, go home,” wrote the activist, also publishing a video along with this message.

“Bravo Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico. Bravo for giving political asylum to Betssy Chávez. Betssy Chávez, who should be the Prime Minister of Peru right now, and would be if it weren’t for lithium, and the gringos stealing lithium from her country. In this sense, the composer accused Peru’s ruling class of evading democracy to favor the “American lithium company.” “Let’s be completely clear about what is happening,” he stated, in addition to reiterating his support for the people of Peru in the fight against the United States invasion.
“Leave Pedro Castillo out of jail, idiots, he is the elected President of Peru, let him govern the country, until they have another election, of course. Claudia, a lot of strength for you. Betssy, a lot of strength for you too,” he concluded.
In December 2002, the then President Pedro Castillo was dismissed by the Peruvian Congress in addition to being placed under arrest, a situation that was condemned on different occasions by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), who in February 2024 described what happened as a “technical coup d’état.”
“We cannot accept to remain silent in the face of the injustice that was committed when the legal and legitimate President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, was removed. We consider that it was a technical coup d’état,” he said.
“We consider that it was a technical coup d’état, they call it soft; it is no longer a heavy hand but a soft hand. We do not want either the hard hand or the soft hand, any type of coup d’état. There are our differences with the Government of Peru, not with the people of Peru, that must be kept in mind,” he added.
It should be noted that the same Congress of Peru that declared Claudia Sheinbaum persona “non grata” has barely two percent approval, according to the results of a survey carried out by the Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP), which were published in March 2025 in the newspaper The Republicwhile President Dina Boluarte has 90 percent disapproval, according to the same indicator.
