“Let’s not wait for the disease to knock on our door,” he said.l Doctor Luis Mariano Toyaya Lara, president of College of Pediatrics of the State of Yucatán AC, When talking about the importance of influenza vaccination as prevention measure.
“With the flu vaccine we have the opportunity to give our children an essential shield for a healthier winter,” said the doctor, after pointing out that no one should have the luxury of ignoring vaccination.
Every year the influenza claims the health and even the lives of thousands of people in the world.
In Yucatan, Where climate and health conditions vary, the risk increases, especially among the most vulnerable sectors.
“It is not a simple cold; it is a contagious respiratory disease that can be particularly serious, especially among young children (particularly those under five years of age), those with chronic diseases (such as asthma or diabetes) and pregnant women,” said the specialist.
He also insisted that the influenza vaccine is the most effective tool to protect children and the entire family. In fact, he gave at least four reasons not to postpone the application:
- 1) Direct protection against serious illness: “Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of children developing severe cases of influenza requiring hospitalization.”
“The vaccine not only protects against infection, but also decreases the likelihood of serious complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis and ear infections.”
- 2) Reducing risks of chronic complications: “For children already living with chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, influenza can trigger a dangerous worsening of their condition.”
“The vaccine acts as a buffer, preventing the seasonal disease from causing further damage.”
- 3) Prevention of spread (“Herd effect”): “When we vaccinate our children we not only protect them, but we also break the chain of transmission.”
“We protect babies too young to be vaccinated (under six months), grandparents and family members who may have a weakened immune system. This is known as herd or community immunity.”
- 4) Relief of the burden on the health system: “Mass vaccination helps ensure that hospitals and medical staff can focus on other emergencies and diseases, especially during the winter season.”
The doctor stressed that all children from six months of age should receive the influenza vaccine annually, since the virus mutates every year, so a new formulation is necessary that provides effective protection.
The ideal season to apply the vaccine is between October and November. “To ensure that children are protected before virus activity peaks,” Toraya Lara stressed.
The School’s call is directed especially to parents and guardians, who have the decision to protect children’s health in their hands.
“We urge all parents and guardians in Yucatán to go to their pediatrician, health center or hospital to find out and request the application of the vaccine. It is an act of love, responsibility and community care,” said the specialist.
