MERIDA.— Trans women in Yucatán can now make the official change of name and gender identity in the State Civil Registry.
The association Mayan Princesses confirmed that several of its members have already received their new documents with legally recognized names and identities. “With this we will stop being violated when carrying out procedures, since several girls received their gender identity changes,” explained Dorian Michelle Herrera Ku, president of the group.
Herrera Ku highlighted that this advance will also allow adjustments to be made before the National Electoral Institute (INE), with which trans women will be able to obtain their credential with the updated name. “Finally we can have an official document that respects who we are,” he said.

“When we carried out a procedure they called us by our previous name, but now with this new registry our identity must be respected because there is a document that supports us,” Herrera Ku stressed.
Accompanied by members of the organization, the activist celebrated the legal recognition as an important step towards equality and non-discrimination. “In Yucatán there are positive advances in favor of the trans community, just like in other parts of Mexico,” he noted.
