After a series of studies carried out in the municipalities of Muna, Cantamayec and Opichén, specialists from the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP) announced the results of the application of biosolids in corn production, a project carried out in collaboration with the agri-food company Kekén and local farmers.

As reported in a statement, before academics, researchers, municipal and ejidal authorities of various municipalities, Bartolo Rodríguez Santiago, regional director of CIRSE – INIFAP, MC shared that the biosolid is a byproduct derived from the wastewater treatment process in the Yucatecan company’s technical farms, revealing itself as a sustainable and efficient alternative as an organic fertilizer for vegetable and corn crops, this according to the results of their research.

Scopes

Through an event held in the municipality of Muna, in the presence of federal authorities from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), local authorities, representatives of Kekén and farmers in the region, the scope monitored after its application was announced, among which the following stand out: improving plant nutrition, stimulating and strengthening root development, conserving soil moisture and improving the structure and PH of the soil.

In this regard, he added that the recent study showed that the use of biosolids favors the physical characteristics of the soil, including stony terrain that characterizes the Yucatan Peninsula, obtaining excellent yields.

“The application of the biosolid has many benefits, it improves the physical characteristics of the soil, in the case of these stony soils it improves fertility, maintains humidity and of course crop yield,” said the specialist.

For his part, Miguel Carbajal, director of sustainability at Kekén, highlighted that the delivery of these results will allow more producers to know, through the voices of experts and other farmers, the proven benefits of biosolids in their crops; and in this way opt for friendlier practices.

In his speech, Prof. Carlos Ayuso Vera, mayor of Muna, recognized this initiative as a development tool for the Yucatecan countryside, because according to his words it not only represents an opportunity to improve the quality and quantity of production, but also represents significant savings for the farmer.

Finally, Jorge Barbosa, a farmer from the same municipality, shared his direct experience with the use of Biosolid, from the Kekén farms, ensuring that it is a good option to recover the soil, maintain yield and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.

It is worth mentioning that throughout this year, the pork producing company, through its “Stay in the Country” program, has implemented various actions that seek to encourage support for local producers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and well-being in rural communities.
