The Senate approved the list of 10 candidates for the FGR and sent it to the Executive, which must return a shortlist to choose Alejandro Gertz Manero’s successor.
Mexico City, December 2 (However).- With 88 votes in favor, 28 against and two abstentions, the Senate of the Republic approved this Tuesday the list of 10 aspirants who seek to occupy the ownership of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR)after the departure of Alejandro Gertz Manero.
The list, made up equally of five women and five men, includes profiles with political, academic and legal careers. Among them, the current office manager of the FGR, Ernestina Godoy Ramos; the tax lawyer Luis Manuel Pérez de Acha; and the Morenoist Deputy Hamlet García Almaguerwhich anticipates an intense debate in the Executive.
However, the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) modified the list of profiles at the last minute by replacing Alfredo Barreras with Félix Roel Herrera, because the former did not meet the administrative requirements. The other finalists are: Luz María Zarza, Maribel Bojorges, Sandra Luz González, Mirna Lucía Grande, David Borja and Miguel Nava.
After the approval of candidates, the procedure will continue its course with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who will have to make up a shortlist and return it to the Senate. From there will come the person who will take ownership of the FGR for a period of nine years.
The candidates who make up the shortlist will appear before the plenary session to present their work project, and answer the questions of the senators. This step will be key to defining the profile that the Prosecutor’s Office will lead at a time of high expectations regarding its role in the fight against corruption, security and the administration of justice.
According to current regulations, candidates must meet certain requirements: be Mexican by birth, be at least 35 years old, have a professional degree in Law with at least 10 years of experience, enjoy a good reputation and have no convictions for intentional crimes.
Adán Augusto foresees that the Senate will appoint the head of the FGR this Wednesday
The president of the Jucopo, Adán Augusto López Hernández, announced that the process of appointing the next head of the FGR could conclude this Wednesday. With this, he indicated that, if the deadlines were met, the swearing-in of the elected person would take place that day.
In an interview, López Hernández expressed his confidence that the President will send the corresponding shortlist this Tuesday to continue with the process, which will allow progress towards the final selection.
The Senator specified that, once the shortlist is received, the proposed people must appear before the Upper House. With this, he said, the Senate will be in a position to conclude the designation within the scheduled times.
If any of these stages are not met within the established deadlines—in the event that the Presidency does not send the shortlist on time—the Law provides that the Senate can choose directly from among the registered candidates.
