México exige a EU respeto a combate a embarcaciones del crimen organizado: Sheinbaum

Sheinbaum asked to reinforce maritime security protocols between both nations and avoid unilateral actions that could violate Mexican sovereignty.

Mexico City, October 29 (However).- The Government of Mexico responded this Wednesday firmly to the attack carried out by forces Americans against one vessel allegedly dedicated to drug trafficking in international waters of the Peacefulin coordinates close to the territory national.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo demanded that the United States government strengthen maritime cooperation protocols and avoid any unilateral action that compromises the country’s sovereignty.

“We do not agree with these interventions and we have a model, a protocol that has given many results,” he declared during his morning conference.

The federal president confirmed that the operation did not occur within national waters, but did occur in a maritime area close to Mexico. For this reason, he instructed Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to summon US Ambassador Ron Johnson to review and update the joint action protocol.

“Remember that yesterday there was an intervention by the United States for a boat that was allegedly carrying drugs in international waters… but already in what has to do with the location of our country,” Sheinbaum said.

He also explained that the current model establishes that, upon detection of suspicious vessels at sea, the United States must notify Mexico so that the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) can intervene. This mechanism, he said, has worked and must be respected.

“What we want is for this protocol to be improved within the framework of the security agreements we have with the United States, but for it to continue operating… we do not want there to ever be a violation of our sovereignty, nor do we want this type of operations in the economic zone,” he said.

Last Monday, the US launched an attack that left 14 people dead and one survivor, whose rescue has not yet been carried out by the Mexican Navy. The nationality of the deceased and the survivor remains unconfirmed.
