The Olinia electric car project of the Government of Mexico took a step forward with the signing of an agreement for the state company LitioMx to be responsible for the manufacturing of batteries that will be used in the vehicles.
Mexico City, November 9 (However).- The Government of Mexico has taken a new step on its path towards its foray into the electric vehicle market, by signing with the state company Lithium for Mexico (LitioMx)through the Secretary of Energy (Sener)an agreement for the manufacture of lithium batteries that will be used in the car line Olinia.
The agreement in question was celebrated on Saturday, November 8, in a meeting in which the Undersecretary of Energy participated, Jorge Iglesias; Pablo Taddei of LithioMx; Roberto Capuano Trippin charge of the Olinia project; as well as some representatives of the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti).
The project aims to install a pre-industrial scale assembly plant for battery packs for use in electromobility and low-demand stationary storage, something that, according to Sener, will be of great importance for the manufacturing of Olinia electric cars.
“This project will be supported through resources for innovation and technological development administered by Sener,” the federal agency indicated in a message shared through social networks.

Prior to the signing of the agreement, the head of the Ministry of Energy, Luz Elena González, had already reported on progress in the “lithium value chain” and the manufacturing of batteries for the Olinia project.
“We are looking to scale up to build a pilot plant, which right now is at the laboratory level, but the idea is to build a pilot plant this year and continue advancing in that direction,” declared the official, who highlighted that the project will be financed through Sener’s Innovation and Technological Development resources.
What is known about Olinia vehicles?
So far, the Government of Mexico has released several details about its line of electric cars, such as the models that will be available and their price range.
In an interview with SinEmbargo, Roberto Capuano pointed out that there will be three models: personal mobility, neighborhood mobility and one more for last mile deliveries, all designed for urban spaces.
The official explained that the idea is for development work to be carried out over the next six years, but assured that the federal government’s intention is to present an Olinia during the opening of the World Cup on the Azteca Stadium field in 2026.
The Coordinator of the Olinia project mentioned that the objective is to make a product for the national market and that the main challenge is not technological, but rather ensuring that the car has a low cost.
Among some of the most outstanding technical aspects of the Mexican minicar will be its exclusive use for urban spaces, the ease of recharging it in any home and its low cost, which will range between 90 and 150 thousand pesos.
