Michelle Obama has long been the subject of speculation every time a presidential election rolls around. But at a recent event for her new book, The Look, she made it unmistakably clear why she won’t be entering the race, and her reasoning struck a painful chord, as per a report by BuzzFeed.
During a conversation with host Tracee Ellis Ross, Obama was asked how the role of first lady shapes public expectations of women in leadership. Ross wondered, “Do you think that impacts the room that we’ve made for a woman to be president?”
Obama didn’t hesitate. Well, as we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” Obama responded.
“That’s why I’m like, ‘Don’t even look at me about running, ’cause you all are lying,”She turned to the audience and said, “You’re not ready for a woman. You are not.”
“So, don’t waste my time. You know, we got a lot of growing up to do,” she continued as the crowd applauded. “And there’s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it,” as per a report by BuzzFeed.
