Founded more than 600 years ago in central Germany, the Einbecker brewery has survived fires, famines, two major epidemics and four catastrophic wars, staying afloat thanks to constant demand for its bock beers. Now it faces what may be its biggest threat: Germans drink much less beer.
“In the last few years it was always 46 percent, 47 percent, 48 percent saying, ‘Yes, I drink beer,’” said Marc Kerger, president of Einbecker, referring to consumer surveys. “And this year only 41 percent. 41 percent is dramatic.”
