Carlos Bautista, local deputy and a member of the Hat Movementwho founded Manzo and who came to power in Uruapan in 2024, he indicated in an interview with Formula Radio who has already sent the proposal to Congress place so that Greece Quiroz be named Municipal President substitute of Uruapan.
“It was a very easy decision,” said Bautista, who announced that they hope the appointment will be approved in the state Congress on Wednesday. “There was no objection, we all agreed. The Governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, had already announced over the weekend that the Executive and Legislative powers of the entity were going to respect the decision made by the Uruapan Council regarding the election of a successor for Manzo, since it was the Sombrero Movement and not a specific political party that came to power through the polls and that decision had to be respected.
In turn, the president of the Political Coordination Board of the Michoacan Congress, Fabiola Alanís Sámano, said last night that the Cabildo “has already decided that Comrade Grecia Quiroz will be the one to assume the Municipal Presidency.” In interview with The Heraldthe Representative indicated that the process “does not take much time.”
“As soon as they give us official notification to Congress, the Government Commission will make the ruling and from Congress what we have said is that we are here to collaborate with the stability of the municipality, so that things continue to be done,” he told the newspaper.
It is expected that once the Michoacan Congress approves his appointment, Grecia Quiroz assumes the Municipal Presidency of Uruapan this week.
Grecia Quiroz asks to stop violence in protests
Grecia Quiroz called on Monday for the demonstrations over the murder of her partner to be carried out peacefully, since in recent hours acts of vandalism have been carried out in repudiation of what happened against the Mayor on November 1.
Through a video broadcast on Carlos Manzo’s official TikTok account, the Mayor’s widow said that after the attack against her husband “things are happening that he would not have liked”, because his fight was not directed towards violent events, but she insisted on continuing to raise her voice about what happened during the Candle Festival in the center of Uruapan, where the official was attacked with bullets.
“We are going to demand and we are going to ask for justice for Carlos. This is not going to stay like this. However, I ask the citizens who are demonstrating in some parts of the city of Uruapan, who are falling into the issue of vandalism, I ask you as a favor, and in memory of Carlos, that we please do it peacefully, let’s do it in a civilized manner.”
In this sense, the woman asked to honor the memory of Carlos Manzo, as she explained that he “was always against violence.” In addition, he pointed out the existence of groups that seek to take advantage of what happened, for which he reiterated his call not to affect third parties in Uruapan. “Do not demonstrate in a disorderly manner,” he said in the video broadcast on social networks.
Carlos Manzo, who was a local Deputy for Morena and then an independent Mayor, maintained a profile critical of organized crime and distant from traditional parties, which placed him in an uncomfortable position with various political actors. His murder is interpreted as a blow to those who have denounced the infiltration of crime in local governments.
Security authorities identified this Monday Osvaldo Gutiérrez Vázquez, alias “El Cuate”, as responsible for the murder, who was originally from the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood, in Apatzingán, Michoacán, and had links with a man known as “El Prángana”, operator of the brothers Ramón and Rafael Álvarez Ayala, alias “R1” and “R2”, alleged members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The head of the Attorney General’s Office of Michoacán, Carlos Torres, released videos in which it was observed that the Mayor’s attacker went to the Candle Festival without security filters, in addition to revealing that the weapon used by the aggressor is a 9 millimeter pistol.
Apatzingán burns with protests over Carlos Manzo
Protesters set fire to and vandalized the Municipal Palace of Apatzingán, Michoacán, during a series of protests in the entity over the murder of the Mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, and the lemon leader, Bernardo Bravo. The mobilization took place on Monday with the demand for justice and security in the region.
According to reports, the dissatisfied group advanced through the main streets of Apatzingán until they reached the Municipal Palace, where they broke doors and windows and entered the interior of the building. On the ground floor of the building, the protesters started a fire that quickly spread to several offices.
During the events, the participants hung a blanket on the main balcony to demand the resignation of Mayor Fanny Arreola Pichardo, a Morena activist. In addition, they destroyed offerings and decorations alluding to the Day of the Dead that were installed in the central plaza.
As the demonstration progressed, the protesters raised slogans against Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, whom they accused of not guaranteeing the safety of the mayors and community leaders of Michoacán. With this, the protest turned violent when a group began throwing objects and furniture from the balconies of the building.
