MEXICO CITY.— This Tuesday, at the usual morning press conference of the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardoparticipated Marcela Figueroa Francoholder of Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (Sesnsp).

In her speech, Marcela Figueroa reported that homicides in Mexico fell by 37% in the first thirteen months of Claudia Sheinbaum’s government, a period in which more than 37,000 were arrested for high-impact crimes and almost three hundred tons of drugs were confiscated, according to preliminary figures.

The daily average of murders decreased to 54.5 in October compared to 86.9 in September 2024, the last month of the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), which implies 32 fewer homicides per day, according to Marcela Figueroa.

In addition, the official reported that last month was the October with the lowest record of intentional homicides since 2016.

“In this period (when analyzing) the first nine months of each year, 2025 is the lowest since 2016,” said Marcela Figueroa.

The head of Sesnsp explained that seven of the 32 Mexican states account for 51% of homicides in the first ten months of the year: Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Baja California, Sinaloa, State of Mexico, Guerrero and Michoacán.

At least 37,000 detained

For his part, the secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuchreported that in the first thirteen months of the current Administration, 37,000 people were arrested for high-impact crimes.

During that period, 18,981 firearms and almost three hundred tons of drugs were also seized, including more than four million fentanyl pills, García Harfuch stated.

“The Army and Navy dismantled 1,614 laboratories for the production of methamphetamines, which represents an economic impact of hundreds of millions of pesos for the organized crime. They are also million doses of drugs that they will not reach the streets and will not affect the health and development of thousands of young people,” the official added.

García Harfuch highlighted some results of security operationssuch as the arrests in Tijuana, Baja California, of a person responsible for fentanyl transfer and methamphetamine to the United States; and the arrest of Yahir Francisco ‘N’in the State of Mexico, who was a member of Beltrán Leyva Cartel and he had an arrest warrant in the US.

He also highlighted the seizure of 2.5 tons of cocaine on the coast of Michoacán, in addition to various operations in Nayarit and Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco and Chiapas.

National security strategy

For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum defended the security strategy implemented by her government.

“How has it been achieved? Strengthening the intelligence and investigation and coordination strategy. There are two, we always put it that way. And particularly four axes, attention to the causes, consolidation of the National Guard, the National Intelligence and Investigation System that allows arrests to be made within the law in our legal framework and coordination,” the president said.

Claudia Sheinbaum assumed the presidency on October 1, 2024, after the record of more than 196,000 murders registered during the six-year term of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, leader of the same party as the head of state, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), while homicides increased 1.2% annually in 2024 to 30,057, according to official statistics.
