In an interview with “Los Periodistas”, the Secretary of the Interior of the capital César Cravioto pointed out that after the violence recorded in the march on October 2, the capital authorities have implemented measures such as checking the backpacks of hooded people to avoid acts of vandalism.
Mexico City, October 29 (However).- Cesar CraviotoSecretary General of the Government of Mexico City, explained that after the events that occurred during the march of the October 2the Government of Mexico City implemented new measures to prevent acts of vandalism without restricting the right to free demonstration.
“On October 2 we met with the Committee of ’68, and they asked us that there be no presence of public forces because it generates a negative reaction. We made the decision to keep it away. However, when we saw that there were groups with tools to open curtains and vandalize, we decided to bring it closer,” explained César Cravioto in an interview with “The Journalists”a program that is broadcast through the SinEmbargo Al Aire YouTube channel.
The official pointed out that more than 400 hooded people participated in said march, when in similar mobilizations there are usually between 40 and 60.
“It was clear that it was a provocation. We saw two types of hooded people: those who came prepared to cause damage and young people who are students, but with a legitimate political claim. Not all those who vandalize are necessarily them,” he stated.
Cravioto considered it necessary for the organizers of large demonstrations in the capital to distance themselves from violent groups.
“From my point of view there must be a firmer position on the part of those who organize the large marches in the city to distance themselves from these groups. If we had reacted on October 2, a very regrettable event could have happened. We take responsibility for the decisions and say we prefer to endure.”
Regarding the new measures, the secretary explained that in recent demonstrations, backpacks of hooded people have begun to be searched.
“Some media outlets criticized us for not having done anything on October 2; now they criticize us for searching backpacks. We must always maintain the balance between allowing free expression and avoiding affecting third parties,” he concluded.
