The president of Coparmex pointed out an absence of the State against extortion and floor collection, whose crimes threaten the country’s businessmen.
Mexico City, November 15 (However).- The president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex), Juan José Sierra Álvarezwarned on Friday that “the extortion “It is the crime that has thousands of businessmen in the country on their knees,” which is why he pointed out a absence of the state in this sense.
Within the framework of the Coparmex 2025 national meeting, Sierra Álvarez said that there are opinions that consider the country to be “tired of living in fear“, tired of the uncertainty, tired of the lack of answers.”
“Behind this anger are a multiplicity of crimes, but undoubtedly especially serious are those of extortion and collection of fees. These practices are no longer marginal to become a structure of economic and political control that defines life in too many territories and economic sectors,” said the businessman.
In this sense, Juan José Sierra spoke of the lack of reporting for this crime and assured that its expansion is related to an institutional failure. “Without the presence of the State, without justice, without protection, there is no economic freedom or possible coexistence,” launched the president of Coparmex.
It is worth remembering that in October 2025, the Legal Counsel of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Ernestina Godoy Ramos, reported that an initiative was sent to the Congress of the Union to approve the crime of extortion at the federal level and that it be prosecuted ex officio.
“What is intended is that all states and at the federal level the crime of extortion has the same elements and is prosecuted ex officio by the authorities and it is intended that the presentation of the complaint is not necessary for its investigation,” indicated the Counselor in Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning conference.
The official stated that the proposal, which must be approved in the Congress of the Union in November of this year, contemplates a penalty ranging from six to 15 years in prison for the crime of extortion and there will be a series of aggravating factors, which will be when the extortion is for the collection of a flat, or when the victims are migrants, for example.
In addition, it also establishes as aggravating factors cases in which the extortionists are public servants or when the crime is committed from a prison.
To achieve the homologation of the crime at the federal level, the initiative includes reforms to different legal systems such as the Federal Penal Code, local criminal codes and the Federal Law against organized crime.
However, during a particular discussion in the Chamber of Deputies in October 2025, Morena coordinator Ricardo Monreal presented last-minute reservations that were endorsed by the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), the Labor Party (PT) and the Citizen Movement (MC).
Apart from the above, the president of Coparmex urged the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum to undertake a national strategy against this crime.
“It is up to the Federal Government to lead a national strategy against extortion from a state perspective, beyond political cycles, parties and groups, that eradicates the collusion networks that make impunity possible,” he said.
