welcome message

Words spoken tonight by architect Javier Muñoz Menéndez at the opening ceremony of the “Art for Education” auction, benefiting Impulso Universitario:

Good evening to all of you.

What a privilege to gather tonight around something as powerful as art, and as transcendent as education. In times when our country faces deep social wounds, political divisions, and a decomposition that hurts, the simple fact of finding ourselves here—to build, to add, to believe—is already an act of hope.

We live in a Mexico that, despite its enormous cultural and human wealth, suffers inequalities that hurt, violence that fragments, and a loss of trust that challenges us all. But we also live in a Mexico that does not give up: a Mexico that creates, that thinks, that wakes up every day convinced that it is worth continuing to invest in knowledge, culture and solidarity.

And tonight, that Mexico, that hopeful Yucatán is here, represented in each work, in each artist and in each of you.

I want to thank, with deep respect and admiration, the artists who have donated their works. Throughout the 20 editions of Art for Education, 533 artists have participated and 1,969 works have been auctioned. Thank you all for reminding us that art is not only a space for contemplation, but also for action; that can be a vehicle of consciousness, healing and change. Throughout history, art has been the voice of those who do not have one, the mirror of our truths and the refuge of our emotions. Today, it is again when it puts itself at the service of education.

And also, thanks to you—Sponsors, business leaders, and allies of the transformation—for believing in Impulso and believing that higher education is one of the most powerful tools to build a more equitable and sustainable society.

At Impulso Universitario we are convinced that education cannot be limited to academic training. Just as important as scientific knowledge is human training: that which teaches us to look at others with empathy, to put sensitivity at the service of reason, ethics at the service of science, and the heart at the service of knowledge. Only in this way will we ensure that education not only forms competent professionals, but also conscious professional citizens, committed to the common good, alert to injustice and corruption and supportive in the search for a more just and less unequal society.

Each work that we auction today symbolizes that union: the encounter between intelligence and sensitivity, between art and science, between beauty and responsibility. It represents the faith that Yucatán and Mexico can be different—more empathetic, more human—if we continue betting on talent and education with a social sense.

Art teaches us to look deeply; Education teaches us to act with conscience. And when both meet, hope is born.

It has been 26 years that have resulted in 1,727 scholarships awarded and 1,111 graduates from Impulso Universitario. Tonight, our generosity will be the foundation of the careers of many of the 286 young people who are currently in the training process and who long for and deserve the opportunity to grow to courageously build a better future for their children.

So I invite you to participate with your heart, to be inspired by art and remember that each bid not only acquires a work, but also promotes a story, a vocation… A life.

Thanks for being here. Thank you for believing in art, education and University Impulse.

With deep gratitude and hope, I declare this art auction inaugurated.

May art inspire us, may education guide us, and may empathy unite us.
