The plantations are located in the Ejido Agua Bendita, within a temperate coniferous forest that functions as a living laboratory for Forest Sciences students.
Mexico City, November 23 (However).- The Autonomous University of Chapingo (UACh) reported yesterday that it will carry out a large Christmas tree sale managed sustainably with the purpose that they can join the aroundat the end of the festival, with the least environmental footprint possible.
According to this study house, the specimens come from commercial forest plantations established and technically managed in the Ejido Agua Bendita in Amanalco de Becerra, State of Mexico.
Collaboration with the ejido allows us to strengthen local capacities, open spaces for pre-professional practices, research and promote replicable models for forest communities in the country.
In addition to purchasing the Christmas tree, visitors will be able to learn about the work involved in the process of planting and caring for the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), species widely appreciated for its conical shape, fresh aroma and durability indoors.
The care of this tree species involves coordinated academic, scientific and community work behind each natural Christmas tree grown responsibly for commercialization.
The institution explained that “throughout their growth, these specimens capture carbon dioxide, generate income for rural communities and, once the season is over, they can be incorporated into the environment without leaving long-lasting waste and reducing the environmental footprint.”
In addition, he indicated that “they spent between 6 and 8 years of growth in a cycle that received pruning, health monitoring, weed control and technical management, in order to ensure their quality and health.”
The UACh commented that the sale of the specimens will be offered in two modalities: cut trees and potted trees.
For cut trees, specialists recommend:
- Place it away from direct heat sources, such as stoves, radiators, fireplaces or very hot lights.
- It is better to opt for LED type lights.
- Use a base with a water tank and check the level daily.
- Provide water at all times to reduce dehydration.
- Avoid exposure to very dry or direct air currents.
And for potted trees, it is important to keep the substrate slightly moist, without waterlogging, and place it in a well-lit location, but without intense direct sun.
Finally, the UACh recommends taking the cut trees to collection centers where they can be shredded to produce compost that is later used in green areas and soil restoration projects.
For potted trees that were kept alive, it is suggested to transplant them into suitable gardens, patios or coordinate with urban or peri-urban reforestation projects, as long as the site is suitable for the species.
The exhibition will take place at the facilities of the Forest Sciences Division (DICIFO) of this university, from November 24 to December 13 and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
