In a powerful ceremony taking place across America, volunteers gathered to honor fallen soldiers as part of Wreaths Across America. This annual event, held at various locations such as Mare Island Naval Cemetery and Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, attracts people who want to pay their respects to those who have died. Despite the cold temperatures, many gathered to place wreaths on the graves and say the names of the deceased aloud.
Steve Nash of the Navy League of the US Vallejo Council is one of the organizers of the event and emphasized the importance of the gesture. He reminded us that the freedoms we enjoy today were bought at a high price. Nash himself donated to ensure all graves could be decorated with a wreath after donations declined this year.
The tradition of Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when Morrill Worcester, inspired by a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, decided to place surplus wreaths on veterans’ graves. This gesture has since grown into a nationwide movement, taking place at over 4,600 locations in all 50 states. The event reminds us that the soldiers’ sacrifices must never be forgotten.
The ceremony also includes a special honor for each military branch as well as the Merchant Marines, POWs and MIAs. Volunteers lay wreaths as Taps is played, remembering the service and sacrifices of veterans. This tradition is seen by many as a way to show respect and gratitude to fallen soldiers and keep their names alive.
