Woori Bank in Seoul has taken a significant step by becoming the first Korean commercial bank to display Bitcoin prices on its main trading floor. This integration of cryptocurrencies alongside traditional financial indicators such as the won-dollar exchange rate and stock market data reflects the increasing importance of digital assets in the global financial market. A bank representative emphasized that Bitcoin is increasingly perceived as an indicator of overall market sentiment.
This development comes at a time when Korean banks are expanding their digital asset infrastructure. Hana Financial Group recently partnered with Dunamu, the operator of the Upbit exchange, to integrate blockchain technologies into various services. Although Woori Bank has not yet announced a formal partnership with a crypto exchange, company executives have signaled multiple times that they want to expand into the digital asset space.
Regulatory developments could put Woori Bank and other major banks in a central position in South Korea’s future stablecoin market. The government and the ruling Democratic Party are currently considering a proposal that would limit the issuance of won-based stablecoins to bank-led consortia with majority ownership. This could secure major lenders a key role in the country’s digital financial landscape.
In parallel, South Korea is preparing one of the most aggressive measures to combat financial crimes related to cryptocurrencies. The new regulations expand the requirements of the Travel Rule and allow investigators to preemptively freeze suspicious accounts. These measures are scheduled to be submitted to the National Parliament in the first half of 2026 and are in line with international standards as set by the Financial Action Task Force.
