Kenia López Rabadánpresident of the Chamber of Deputiesexplained that the Ethics Committee, body in charge of sanctioning inappropriate behavior by legislatorsone year after the current legislature came into office.
“We all know that the Ethics Committee has not been established and I, in a very respectful way, I truly say it in an institutional manner, I hope that agreements are reached for this Ethics Committee to be established, so that the Ethics Committee can define, in the event that any legislator contravenes what is established by law, what we even swear when we take protest: to preserve and ensure that the Constitution is preserved and if not, that we be sued,” he pointed out.

‘The Ethics Committee is a decision that will have to be made in the Jucopo’
However, the decision to install the Ethics Committee is made by the Political Coordination Board of the Chamber of Deputies (Jucopo) and what the Board of Directors does is execute the sanctions.
“The Ethics Committee is a decision that will have to be made in the Political Coordination Board and I always respect the powers of the Board. We at the table will execute the resolution, but we cannot execute a sanction as long as there is no Ethics Committee. It is not the Board of Directors, I understand, it is the Political Coordination Board, and I hope that they are in a position, that we are in a position ready for that to happen,” he reiterated.
In contrast, Kenia López Rabadán explained that the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies, can apply discounts to legislators’ diet in case they do not show up for work.

“In economic matters, the Board of Directors has the obligation to enforce what the law says. If you do not vote, to give an example, if you do not vote on the opinions, let’s say, you do not have the right to cover your salary, in this case it is called a per diem, as a legislator, because in a strict sense you could take roll call but you were not attending the votes,” he warned.
