Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez was the municipal president of Uruapan, Michoacán, who died last night in the hospital, after being shot this Saturday night while inaugurating the Candle Festival in the main square of that city.

Councilor Víctor Saladitas, a municipal employee, as well as a bodyguard of the mayor were also injured at the scene.

It was preliminarily announced that at the beginning of that event and in the midst of thousands of people, two armed men shot at the independent municipal president. When repelling the attack, the security force and police elements injured one of the attackers who apparently died on the way to the hospital and detained another.

Hours before the attack, Manzo Rodríguez toured the main streets of the downtown area, from where he made a live broadcast through his social networks.

The governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, condemned the attack against the municipal president on social networks and reported that security elements are at the scene.

Who was Carlos Manzo?

Carlos Manzo ran as an independent candidate for the municipal presidency of Uruapan in the 2024 elections and was the winner.

Before becoming mayor, Manzo was a deputy for Morena from 2021 to 2024. From 2017 to 2018 he was auditor of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Michoacán.

Manzo studied a degree in Political Science and Public Management at the Western Institute of Technology and Higher Studies (ITESO).
