The mayor’s office Gustavo A. Madero lived one of the most massive days in its history by receiving 12.8 million pilgrims during the first two days of the celebrations for the 494th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupea figure that marks an unprecedented record in the district.
The mayor Janecarlo Lozano reported that this result was possible thanks to close coordination with the Head of Government of Mexico City, as well as with various local and federal agencies.
He highlighted that, for the first time, the visitor count was carried out using facial recognition technology, through 300 video cameras installed in the first quadrant of the mayor’s office, connected to the recently inaugurated Intelligence Center of Gustavo A. Madero. The figure was confirmed by the Comprehensive Risk Management Secretariat and by the security team inside the Basilica.
To guarantee the safety and orderly movement of parishioners, since last December 6, the Basilica Operation 2025a joint strategy between the three levels of government that will remain in force until December 14.
5,050 elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security participate in this deployment, as well as members of the National Guard, the Army and the Navy.
Thanks to this device, on December 11 and 12, 15 people were arrested for crimes such as robbery and improper use of public roads.
The mayor stressed that the Intelligence Center allowed an immediate reaction to stop abuses against pilgrims, particularly extortions that reached amounts of between 1,000 and 1,500 pesos for parking spaces.
“The Intelligence Center helped us respond faster. With this we were able to stop these offenders who were extorting between 1,000 and 1,500 pesos from parishioners for a parking space. There was a strong hand against those who abused the pilgrims.”
“Those who believed that it was like other years, that they could come to steal, to abuse a passerby, here they ran into a very strong government,” he said.
In terms of consumer protection, in coordination with INVEA and PROFECO, three establishments were suspended for incurring excessive prices. In addition, the care and location of 78 missing people was reported, who managed to reunite with their families.
In the area of health, 3,995 medical services were provided inside the Basilica and 2,607 on the Guadalupe Causewayof which four people required transfer to hospitals.
In response to neighborhood demands, a special cleaning operation was carried out in which workers from the City Government, the Ministry of Works and the mayor’s office participated, achieving the collection of 1,400 tons of solid waste.
While the mayor’s veterinary clinic, in coordination with AGATAN, rescued and cared for 30 peregrine dogs, who will be put up for adoption.
Finally, Janecarlo Lozano He thanked the efforts of the 18,000 workers involved in the operation and assured that this experience sets a precedent in terms of security, heading towards large-scale events such as the 2026 Soccer World Cup, where the arrival of 6 million visitors to the country’s capital is expected.
