Visa sees the future of online shopping in automation through AI agents. These should take over the entire shopping process, from product search to comparison to purchase. To make this possible, Visa developed the Trusted Agent Protocol, which aims to ensure secure communication between AI agents and merchants.
The Trusted Agent Protocol was developed in collaboration with the security service provider Cloudflare. It should be able to distinguish trustworthy agents from malicious automations. Visa works closely with partners such as Adyen, Ant International, Checkout.com, Coinbase, Cybersource, Elavon, Fiserv, Microsoft, Nuvei, Shopify, Stripe and Worldpay to create an ecosystem of intelligent payments.
Jack Forestell, Chief Product & Strategy Officer at Visa, emphasizes the responsibility of the entire payments system to ensure that merchants can trust AI agents as much as they trust their best customers. The new protocol aims to provide a no-code functionality for merchants to securely identify agents with purchase intent and enable a personalized experience.
In the long term, Visa plans to develop the Trusted Agent Protocol into an open standard. To this end, the company will work with global standardization bodies such as IETF, OpenID Foundation and EMVCo. The aim is to ensure interoperability with other protocols and to enable shopping using AI agents on a broad basis.
