Owens Community College in Ohio is dedicated to supporting veterans to ease their transition from military service to academic life. This mission is accomplished through the comprehensive services of the College’s Veterans Services Department, which assists military-connected students in utilizing their educational benefits and providing them with access to important resources.
Matthew Taylor, manager of Veterans Services, emphasizes the importance of working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and local veterans organizations. These partnerships provide students with direct access to services and advice to achieve their educational and career goals. For its efforts, Owens Community College was awarded the first class of Ohio State’s Collegiate Purple Star, underscoring the college’s commitment to military students and their families.
An example of the success of these initiatives is Ron Riccardi, a student pursuing his Associate of Applied Science in Welding Engineering. He describes the support of Veterans Services as “indispensable” and highlights how the department helped him organize his classes and effectively utilize his educational benefits. The department also provides networking opportunities with other veterans in the area.
The Veterans Services department is located in Veterans Hall on the Toledo campus, with additional services on the Findlay campus. The facility offers a lounge and quiet spaces for military-affiliated students. The team, which includes Daphne Kinkade, assists students in applying for VA education benefits and scholarship programs such as the Ohio War Orphan Scholarship and the Ohio National Guard Scholarship Program.
In addition to financial and academic support services, the department promotes community through programs such as Veterans Orientation, Vets & Pets wellness events and the Veteran of the Month program. These initiatives create opportunities for engagement, recognition and connection on campus.
On Nov. 6, the Veterans Services Department hosted a free lunch for military-connected students hosted by Warrior Wings, a veteran-owned restaurant. On Nov. 8, the college will serve as the exclusive sponsor of Military Appreciation Night at the Toledo Walleye Game, where the first 1,500 active and former military personnel with a military ID will receive an Owens-Toledo Walleye Challenge Coin.
