In a geopolitically explosive move, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for military support. This request comes against the backdrop of an increased US military presence in the Caribbean, which Caracas perceives as a threat. In particular, Maduro is seeking the delivery of 14 missile units and the overhaul of Russian Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighter jets that Venezuela had previously acquired.
The request was made by Venezuela’s Transport Minister Ramón Celestino Velásquez during a visit to Moscow. He met with his Russian counterpart to discuss the details of military support. The Su-30 fighter jets are seen as a crucial factor in Venezuela’s defense strategy, especially amid rising tensions with the United States.
Venezuela, a close ally of Russia in South America, has steadily expanded its ties with Moscow since the late socialist leader Hugo Chávez’s administration. The two countries recently signed a strategic partnership agreement that aims to further deepen cooperation in various areas, including defense.
However, it remains unclear whether Russia is able or willing to respond to Maduro’s request.
