He is accused of working with the cartel, which is considered a loose alliance of Venezuelan military personnel who support criminal activities.
The US justifies this move by claiming that high-ranking members of the Maduro regime have corrupted state institutions. This escalation comes despite growing international criticism of US policy towards Venezuela. At the same time, the US military is consolidating its presence in the Caribbean and has already taken action against suspected drug smugglers, which is perceived as a threat by Venezuela.
More than 20 boats are said to have been destroyed and over 80 people killed, with the official reason being the fight against drug cartels. Still, there are vague hints of possible diplomatic talks, as President Trump has signaled interest in negotiating with Maduro, although without providing specific details.
Internationally, Maduro is coming under increasing pressure as the EU and several Latin American countries question his legitimacy as president. The U.S. government’s strategy of classifying cartels as terrorist organizations is not new. The Venezuelan cartel “Tren de Aragua” was blacklisted in January. This categorization allows the US to impose sanctions, such as asset freezes, to further limit the cartels’ financial freedom of action.
