The US has launched a new mission aimed at dismantling drug cartels in Latin America with the launch of Operation Southern Spear. This initiative gives an official name and an expanded strategic framework to an already escalating campaign. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the aggressive approach, calling it a significant contribution to national security.
The announcement comes after the US confirmed its 20th strike against a suspected drug ship, killing four people. A total of 80 people have died in these operations so far. U.S. officials say the mission is designed to stop drug shipments before they reach U.S. shores and pressure criminal organizations that use maritime routes across the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
US military resources in the region have grown steadily in recent months. The government has reactivated Roosevelt Roads, a Cold War naval base in Puerto Rico that closed in 2004, and moved the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. These measures are intended to strengthen surveillance and interception capabilities.
President Donald Trump was also briefed this week on possible military options in Venezuela. These range from targeted strikes against cartel-linked infrastructure to broader measures to strengthen regional security. Rubio called the Maduro government a “narco-terrorist regime” that supports drug trafficking.
Some lawmakers, including Sen. Tim Kaine, expressed concerns about possible U.S. military action in Venezuela. Kaine warned that Venezuela has advanced weapons purchased from U.S. adversaries and that even speculative reports of military planning could increase the risks. The White House has not confirmed whether operational plans are moving forward.
