WASHINGTON / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The sale of NVIDIA H200 chips to China is causing controversy in the United States. In the US, the government’s decision to approve the sale of NVIDIA’s H200 chips to China is causing heated discussions. The chairman of the China Committee in the US House of Representatives, John Moolenaar, expressed doubts about the information on which this decision was based. He questions whether the chips manufactured by Huawei can actually compete with NVIDIA’s advanced products.
President Trump recently approved the export of the H200 chips, although some security officials expressed concerns that it could accelerate China’s advances in artificial intelligence. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang argues that Huawei is already so advanced in chip development that it makes no sense to keep NVIDIA out of the Chinese market. However, critics accuse NVIDIA of exaggerating Huawei’s progress in order to receive export approval.
Moolenaar emphasizes that Huawei has tried to circumvent US technology controls by linking together less powerful chips in large numbers to achieve similar results to NVIDIA. He points out that Huawei’s 910C chip, considered a competitor to NVIDIA, was made in Taiwan, which is now banned due to US export controls. The successor 910D had to be produced in China and was less powerful.
Another problem is that Chinese companies like DeepSeek rely on smuggled NVIDIA chips to further develop their AI models. Moolenaar warns that selling advanced chips to China could undermine US strategic advantages in artificial intelligence. A group of senators have already introduced a bill that would stop the export of H200 chips for 30 months.
The debate shows how complex the geopolitical and technological challenges in the field of artificial intelligence are. While some politicians emphasize the economic benefits of exports, others see national security at risk. The debate will continue as the US seeks to secure its technological dominance while China expands its own capabilities.
