ODESSA / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – In a remarkable move, the Ukrainian secret service SBU has detained a ship in Odessa that illegally visited the Russian-annexed Crimea. The freighter, which sailed under the flag of an African state, had previously visited Sevastopol several times to illegally export agricultural products. This action underlines the ongoing tensions and the strict sanctions that Ukraine imposes against such violations.

The Ukrainian secret service SBU has arrested a cargo ship in Odessa that illegally visited Crimea, which was annexed by Russia. This measure is part of Ukraine’s efforts to ensure compliance with international sanctions and prevent illegal trading activities. The freighter, whose name was not disclosed, had called at the port of Sevastopol at least seven times before the Russian invasion in 2022 to export agricultural products to North Africa.

What is particularly explosive is that the ship was sailing under the flag of an African state when it called at Odessa to export steel pipes. This practice of changing the ship’s flag and formal owners to third countries is a well-known method of evading sanctions. The SBU has already imposed sanctions on the actual ship owner to prevent such evasion attempts.

On the ship were the captain and 16 crew members from Middle Eastern countries. They are now facing criminal proceedings, including for illegal entry and financing actions to change Ukraine’s state borders. These allegations reflect the serious consequences of violating international sanctions.

Crimea, a strategically important peninsula in the Black Sea, was annexed by Russia in 2014, which is largely unrecognized internationally. Ukraine continues to consider Crimea as part of its territory and has taken strict measures to defend its sovereignty. The detention of the freighter is another example of Ukraine’s determination to combat illegal activities that threaten its territorial integrity.
