US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will sue the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and demand compensation ranging between one billion and five billion dollars, following the latter’s apology for editing what was described as misleading one of his speeches, but noting that it does not intend to pay for any malfunction or damage.
“We’re going to sue them for $1 billion to $5 billion, maybe sometime next week,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “I think I should do it. Even they admitted to cheating.”
Trump’s lawyers had initially set a deadline of Friday to force the BBC to withdraw its documentary, otherwise it would face a lawsuit for compensation of “no less than” one billion dollars.
They also demanded that the BBC issue an apology and compensate Trump for what they described as “serious damage to his reputation and money.”
The BBC offered a personal apology to Trump on Thursday, after acknowledging that its editing of Trump’s statements was an “error of judgement,” but said there was no legal basis to sue it.
BBC Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness resigned on Sunday due to the controversy.
The documentary, shown on BBC Panorama, combined three video clips from Trump’s speech, creating the impression that he was inciting the riots on January 6, 2021. His lawyers called this edit “false and defamatory.”
